Kept is a private record of the places you go, built from your days and your photos. This page says what Kept keeps, what leaves your phone and why, and how to delete it.
Your photos never leave your phone. Kept never uploads, copies, or stores your images or thumbnails anywhere. It reads the details your phone already saves with each photo, such as when and where it was taken.
Your movement trail stays on your phone. The moment-to-moment GPS readings Kept records are kept only on your device.
Your backup is sealed. What Kept backs up is encrypted on your phone first, with a key we never receive. We store it; we cannot read it.
Where you sleep is protected. Kept never looks up places you stay overnight, or the place you live, on its own.
We don't sell your data, show ads, or track you across other apps.
What leaves your phone, and why
- Locations, to name places. To turn a stop into a place name and suggest nearby places, Kept sends locations from your record — such as where a stop was, or where a photo was taken — to mapping services (Apple and OpenStreetMap). It never sends the photos themselves, your notes, or your history. Answers are kept on your phone, so an area that's been answered isn't looked up again.
- Names, to find places. When you name a city or area in a question, Kept may look that name up with a mapping service. A name is sent, not your location.
- Your questions, when you use Ask. The words of your question and the names you've given places go to our server, which uses an AI service (Anthropic) to understand what you're asking. The search itself then runs on your phone. Your questions are not used to train AI models. If you ask by voice, your speech is turned into text on your phone.
- Your sealed backup. Your stops, the names you give places, and your notes back up encrypted, as described above, so your history survives a lost phone.
- Anonymous usage counts. Kept counts things like "a search ran" so we can tell what's working. These go to an analytics service (PostHog) under a random ID made on your phone. They never include your places, locations, photos, notes, or questions. You can turn this off in Settings.
- Maps. When you look at a map, Apple Maps receives the area on screen, as with any map on your phone.
Protected places
Kept treats places you've stayed overnight, the place you live, and places you've named as a home or lodging as protected. Kept sends nothing about a protected place to a mapping service on its own. If you search for a name there yourself, that one search is sent, and the app tells you so.
Your account
- Sign in with Apple. We receive the account identifier Apple issues, and your email only if you choose to share it. There is no password.
- Ask usage. How many searches you've made, to run the free trial and the fair-use limit.
- Subscriptions, if you subscribe, are handled by Apple and our subscription provider (RevenueCat), which receives your account identifier. Kept never sees your payment details.
Our website
If you enter your email on bestkeptapp.com, we keep it to send you the download link and occasional news about Kept, until you unsubscribe. We don't sell it or share it for anyone else's marketing. To unsubscribe, email keepmemories@googlegroups.com.
Your choices
- Permissions. You can turn off Location or Photos access for Kept at any time in iOS Settings. Kept keeps working with what it already has.
- Usage counts. Turn them off in Kept's Settings at any time.
How long we keep things
Your sealed backup is kept until you delete it or your account. Anonymous usage counts are kept only as long as they help us improve Kept, and are tied to nothing that identifies you. An email you give us on our website is kept until you unsubscribe. Everything else lives on your phone, for as long as you keep it.
Deleting your data
In the app: Settings → Delete everything Kept has stored removes your data from the phone and the cloud backup. Settings → Delete my account removes the account and everything in it. Both are immediate and cannot be undone. Subscriptions are cancelled separately in your App Store settings.
The small print
- The services we use receive only what they need to do their job, and handle it under their own privacy policies.
- The sealed backup is stored with Google Firebase and protected by per-account security rules.
- Kept is not directed at children under 13.
- We may update this policy. The date at the top shows when it last changed.
